every waking moment

2021, performance, ceramic installation.

On March 21st 2021, on the eve of the anniversary of the UK going into lockdown, the artist spent every waking moment of the day producing the same shape on the pottery wheel. Over 16 hours, 101 cylinders were produced. They are shown here in order of being made.

Making from waking to sleep, the piece is a physical record of a day in lockdown: its overwhelm and its emptiness.

This work is a reflection on an exhibition piece that was cancelled a year previously as a result of the pandemic. The piece also marks a pivotal transitory stage in the artist’s evolution, continuing the movement away from throwing for commercial purposes, to making purely as a means of expression. every waking moment is a performance protesting the limitations (both internal and external) of creative practice.
